What Is Insight Meditation?

Insight meditation, or vipassana, is a practice that helps us become more aware of our lives in each moment. It is derived from the teachings of Theravada Buddhism and has continued as a living practice for 2500 years.

Insight meditation teaches us relaxation, serenity and an openness to each moment through mindfulness, kindness and compassion. The practice of mindfulness cultivates a clear, stable and non-judgmental awareness which is highly effective in bringing calmness and clarity to life's ups and downs. It can also open us to the full development of wisdom and compassion and can lead, ultimately, to the end of suffering.

Although the practice of Insight Meditation draws on the teachings of Theravada Buddhism, you do not have to be a Buddhist, or even religious, to practice Insight Meditation. It is practiced by people of many different faiths and beliefs.
