SHOW ME DHARMA DEFINITIONS
Insight meditation, or vipassana, is a practice that helps us become more aware of our lives in each moment. It is derived from the teachings of Theravada Buddhism and has continued as a living practice for 2500 years. Insight meditation teaches us relaxation, serenity and an openness to each moment through mindfulness, kindness and compassion. The practice of mindfulness cultivates a clear, stable and non-judgmental awareness which is highly effective in bringing calmness and clarity to life's ups and downs. It can also open us to the full development of wisdom and compassion and can lead, ultimately, to the end of suffering. Although the practice of Insight Meditation draws on the teachings of Theravada Buddhism, you do not have to be a Buddhist, or even religious, to practice Insight Meditation. It is practiced by people of many different faiths and beliefs.
Dharma is a Sanskrit word which has a number of meanings including the Truth and the Buddha's teachings.
Theravada is a word in the Pali language for Doctrine (or Way) of the Elders. Theravada Buddhism draws its scriptural inspiration from the Pali Canon, the oldest record of the Buddha's teachings. Theravada Buddhism is the form of Buddhism most commonly practiced in Burma (Myanmar), Sri Lanka and Thailand. Follow this link to learn more about Theravada Buddhism.
